Chris Hewitt, J.D.

Fiduciary Counsel

As Fiduciary Counsel, Chris advises the firm’s individual clients on their estate and charitable planning matters and serves as counsel to the Trust Company. He also works with our nonprofit clients regarding their legal and compliance issues.

Prior to joining Trust Company, Chris was a Partner in the Private Wealth group at Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP in its Winston-Salem office. Chris has over a decade of experience advising clients in the areas of estate, generation-skipping transfer and gift tax planning, charitable planning, business succession planning, asset protection and estate and trust administration. Chris also has extensive experience with non-profits, both with private clients (creating and administering private foundations, making grants and navigating compliance issues under the Internal Revenue Code) and institutional clients (creating public charities, corporate charitable foundations, and supporting organizations, advising on charitable solicitation licensing and commercial co-venturing requirements, and assisting with tax compliance issues).

Chris graduated summa cum laude from Campbell University with a B.B.A. in Trust and Wealth Management. While at Campbell University, Chris swam on the club swim team (serving as team captain his senior year) and was involved in numerous other academic and extracurricular activities. Chris received his Juris Doctor cum laude from Wake Forest University School of Law where he served as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Business and Intellectual Property Law.

Chris has two children, Nell and Hayes, and lives in Winston-Salem. Chris is a member of the Council for the Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association and a member of the Winston-Salem Estate Planning Council. Chris recently served as Chair of the SECU Family House in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and continues to be involved with that organization. In his spare time, he enjoys adventuring with his children and dog, lifting weights, playing tennis, and spending time outside (preferably in and around water or on a snow-covered mountain).
